It’s finally warm in New York City. Do you know how long we have been waiting for this? Quite some time now. There was a blissful stint of unusually perfect weather back in April, but then most of May has been gloomy and rainy. Seriously, a couple weeks ago I was feeling so angry one morning and then I realized it was because I had not seen the sun in LITERALLY 9 DAYS. It was horrible.
Now: sunshine abounds, and I am so relieved and content and smiley. On the inside. On the outside I’m a bit stressed with work-related things that I just don’t even want to think about let alone talk about, so, naturally, I came here to distract myself…
On my walk to the office this morning, I serendipitously saw two different older couples who were equally adorable, so adorable I got teary-eyed. (Okay maybe I’m just a stressed-out emotional mess right now?!)
The first couple, each probably in their 70s, was walking up Sixth Ave. hand in hand, wearing the exact same eyeglasses, which I thought was so charming! I imagined that they had worn these identical spectacles for their whole happy life together. Their steps were slow, and weirdly somehow magnetically slowed mine down too while I just observed their coupled cuteness.
The second couple, also probably in their 70s, I saw standing outside of a restaurant off of MacDougal. They seemed more sprightly, and not American. I think because it was so early in the morning and they were peering into a dark, empty restaurant – the fancy kind that’s only open for dinner. In the window was a menu, and they each stood in front of it in the exact same stance: both their eyes squinting to make out the tiny script, both their right arms crossed across their chests, and a half-smoked cigarette perched on both the fingers of their left hands. It was such a sweet and funny sight! I wonder if they noticed?
A fitting tune:
After writing this post, I realized that I have written before about couples in my Serendipitous Sightings, funny how that happened. Here’s one time when I spotted an adorable couple whose sweetness made me tear up, and another time when I saw an amusing interaction between another couple.
